A 2018/2019 Summer Studentship research project

PUBH 712 is the core Hauora Māori paper of the DPH. Students only have 6 weeks of face-to-face lecture time in this paper, therefore it is essential that the best use of this time is made. The use of Moodle to develop learning activities to enable preparation for lectures, or provide extra material following lectures will enhance students learning outcomes in this paper.

Project brief

Introduction

PUBH 712 Foundations of Hauora Māori is 15-point 700-level postgraduate paper which is a core compulsory paper in the Diploma of Public Health (DPH), taught over 6 weeks, with five 3-hour sessions and 1 block day. The paper attracts a range of students from different backgrounds with different levels of prior knowledge. The online learning software 'Moodle' is currently used by the lecturers, however its used could be expanded to enhance learning for students.

Aim

  1. To evaluate the current PUBH 712 Moodle page.
  2. Based on the evaluation findings, develop a Moodle page that is responsive to post-graduate student needs.

Method

  1. Rapid review of the current PUBH 712 Moodle page
  2. Rapid literature review of the use of online learning in post-graduate studies.
  3. Qualitative interviews with past students of PUBH 712 regarding their use of Moodle, and their reflections on what would have enhanced their student experience
  4. Redesign PUBH 712 Moodle page with support from University staff.

Student researcher's component of the study

The student in consultation with Christina McKerchar and Assoc Prof Suzanne Pitama will carry out all aspects of the above study.
