John Dean completed his nurse training in Portsmouth, England in 1980.

After several years as Charge Nurse in Lincoln Accident and Emergency Dept he undertook his Cert. Ed (Adult) and registered as a Nurse Tutor with the English National Board for Nursing and Midwifery.

John moved to the York School of Nursing to take up the newly created position of Head of Dept, Post Registration Studies. He was seconded, as project manager, to coordinate the move of nursing and midwifery education into the University of York. John developed a particular interest in open and distance learning, working with the Open University and Macmillan Open Learning on a number of initiatives.

After moving to New Zealand in 2000 John worked for 5 years in the Accident and Emergency Department at Christchurch Public Hospital as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. He went on to work in a number of positions, as Research Coordinator for the Professor of Nephrology and Project Coordinator for the Emergency Department 'Models of Care' initiative before moving, in 2007, to South Westland as Rural Nurse Specialist based in Franz Josef.

John has taught on the Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education offered by the then Christchurch College of Education.

He was appointed to the Simulation Centre in January 2011. He remains in clinical practice as a rural nurse in Canterbury.
