Biomedical Engineer, Dr Khoon Lim, has been named as 2nd place winner in this year's ISBF Young Investigator Award.

The International Society for Biofabrication (ISBF) offers a suite of awards each year to encourage and reward the contribution of researchers in the field of biofabrication (involving the production of complex biological products – either living or non-living – using materials such as cells, molecules, extracellular matrices and biomaterials).

The ISBF Young Investigator Award recognises the outstanding achievements of a member who is in the early stages of a career in biofabrication.

“It's a highly specialised field of research and very competitive, and so I feel very honoured to have my work recognised in this way” says Dr Lim.

Dr Lim is a Research Fellow with the Christchurch Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering (CReate) Research Group attached to the University of Otago's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine. There he supervises a number of PhD students as well as pursuing his own research projects, which include:

  • Developing new bioinks for 3D Bioprinting of functional tissues
  • Hydrogels for smart delivery of growth factors to promote bone vascularisation
  • Engineering 3D cancer models for high-throughput drug screening
  • Delivery of brain derived growth factor for improved post-stroke recovery
  • Engineering silk as tissue engineering matrices

The award was presented to Dr Lim at the 2018 Biofabrication Conference in Wurzburg, Germany, which he attended and delivered a talk on 3D Bioassembly of breast cancer models.
