ARTV205 New Zealand Art in the Twentieth Century

A survey of the history of the visual arts in New Zealand from the 1890s until the 1970s.

The twentieth century witnessed the establishment, evolution and distinctive identity of New Zealand art. It begins with the impact of impressionism and the meeting of Māori and Pākehā visual traditions. Students will examine the major artists, issues, styles and movements that have shaped New Zealand art. Why was landscape so important for so long? What was the New Zealand 'nationalism' of mid-century? Who was involved in the Māori 'Renaissance' in the twentieth century? These questions will be addressed and case studies presented of significant themes and artists using locally accessible works where possible.
