PHSE520 Akoranga Whakakori: Māori Physical Activity and Health

An introduction to the social and educational significance of physical activity from a Māori perspective.

Māori are the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand and are often represented negatively in the public imagination. Māori physical education (PE) and health issues are discussed and described using deficit modelling.

This paper asks students to challenge the common-sense notions and understandings of Māori PE and health. In particular, this paper will offer a unique strengths-based lens to view Māori PE and health.

The paper is focused on three key whāhanga or topics. These are:

  • Te Ao Māori/Māori worldview
  • Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi
  • Kaupapa Māori theory and methodology
This paper asks students to:
  • Examine perspectives of Māori PE and health
  • Consider appropriate applications for Māori PE and health
  • Relate theoretical concepts to current issues

Paper Structure
There are three wāhanga or topics covered in the paper within a Māori physical education and health context:
  • Te Ao Māori/Māori worldview
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi
  • Kaupapa Māori theory
  • 10% Ko wai koe? Introductory reflective essay
  • 10% Noho marae reflection
  • 10% Final reflection
  • 70% Major research essay and presentation
Teaching Arrangements
There is one compulsory noho marae (stay at a traditional M?üori meeting house) that aims to provide an applied understanding of the paper.
Text books are not required for this paper.
Journal articles and book chapters are provided on Blackboard and at Course Reserve.

Learning Outcomes
PHSE 520 provides the content base for students wanting to work within the field of Māori physical education and health. Students will gain an understanding of their role for working within and supporting Māori aspirations in a New Zealand context. This paper is the platform for PHSE 527 Te Mahi ki ngā Hapori Māori Working with Māori Communities.
