A critical examination and utilisation of research methods and analysis relevant to the conducting of high quality research in tourism and related fields.
This paper involves a period of one semester of supervised study on an approved research
project resulting in the presentation for examination of a research project of a maximum
of 25,000 words. The emphasis in the supervision of the students is on their development
as independent researchers and all the skills associated with this - only one part
of which is the production of the final document.
Recognising the close
links between the academic study of tourism and the tourism industry and the benefits
to both of theoretically informed research, TOUR 590 enables students to engage in
projects that are either more academically or industry oriented, or a blending of
the two. Consequently, all projects, irrespective of their specific nature, will be
grounded in an awareness of relevant conceptual/theoretical debates and potential
consequences for the tourism industry. Through their research project all students
should be able to gain the skills necessary to successfully undertake a PhD or to
work as researchers in the tourism industry.
The blending of the applied
and academic sides of tourism in TOUR 590 is a reflection of the teaching throughout
the MTour programme, which recognises the benefits to students, academia and industry
of fostering links between academia and industry. This is based on a view that all
stakeholders benefit from a programme such as our MTour programme, which combines
pathways for students seeking to go on to further study and those wishing to enhance
their professional career in the industry.
