A programme of in-depth study will be developed jointly by the student and the supervisor, based on a specific area of learning within an Aviation Medicine, Occupational Medicine, or Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport paper. The outcome of the special topic will be a manuscript suitable for publication.

After successful completion of this paper, students will:
- Understand foundation research design frameworks, including qualitative and quantitative approaches relevant in health research.
- Recognise and be able to apply ethical, legal and cultural considerations in health research, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Conduct, interpret and apply basic data collection and analyses relevant to health science.
- Master methodological tools for conducting a literature review.
- Critically appraise the rigor and relevance of health research literature.
- Design and plan a research project proposal in a health context.
- Master conceptual tools of health research, including forming a question, logic, hypothesis testing, critical thinking and reasoning.
- Develop a draft journal article on the research topic.
