- Paper Structure
- Endodontics involves the prevention or treatment of pulp and periapical disease. This module will provide you with evidence-based knowledge and understanding in the biological principles of pulp and periapical disease and healing, together with the clinical skills involved in its management. An advanced endodontic course in Semester Two provides didactic and preclinical experience with rotary root canal instrumentationin preparation for BDS5.
- The aim of this module is to support the acquisition of the knowledge and of the clinical skills needed for the diagnosis and management of patients with all forms of periodontal disease. Periodontal management as part of the inter-disciplinary care of patients’ endodontic, operative and fixed prosthodontic needs will be highlighted.
Clinical Cariology, Prosthodontics and Special Needs module
- The goal of this module is to complete the core teaching in Clinical Cariology, Prosthodontics and Special Needs Dentistry so that students are competent in these disciplines.
Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics module
- This module presents an integrated approach to the management of oral health care in children and adolescents. Students will be stimulated to develop independent learning and to integrate paediatric and orthodontic knowledge and skills in their practice of dental care.
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Therapeutics module
- Theoretical exposure to the surgical and medical aspects of dentistry, including oral surgery, oral medicine and clinical pharmacology in relation to dentistry. The student is expected to develop these skills and apply them to all patients.
Professional Development module
- This module is a continuation of the Professional Development modules of Years 2 and 3. It further extends understanding of consultation skills, bioethics and professionalism and is linked to an advanced information and communication technology component.

On completion of this paper, students are expected to demonstrate:
- The ability to work safely and effectively on patients in dental clinics
- Advanced knowledge, understanding and clinical application of the prevention of dental caries and of the management of restorative procedures necessary as a consequence of dental caries
- The knowledge and skills necessary to manage restoration of teeth with extra-coronial prosthodontic procedures
- The knowledge and skills necessary to manage the partially dentate patient using the principles of both fixed and removable partial dentures
- An understanding of the principles of implant prostheses for partially dentate and edentulous patients
- The knowledge and skills necessary to manage edentulous and nearly-edentulous patients with immediate dentures, root overdentures and complete dentures
- An understanding of the principles of occlusion for the dentate, partially dentate and edentulous patient
- The knowledge and skills to manage the oral health of older adults and an ageing population
