Students who successfully complete this paper will:
- be familiar with pōwhiri and mihimihi and be conversant with key kawa and tikanga to ensure respectful participation on a marae
- be able to deliver a pepeha/mihi in a formal setting
- be able to sing waiata in support of speakers
- be aware of some of the different practices associated with different marae
- understand some of the history, cultural significance and traditional values of the local marae and hapū
- have an expanded appreciation of te ao Māori (Māori world view), mātauranga Māori (traditional Māori knowledge) and their relevance to and implications for environmental and planning issues and practices
- appreciate the interrelatedness of the environmental and cultural consequences of planning and management actions
- be able to design proposals based on a brief reflecting mana whenua planning aspirations
