Overview
An integrated approach to studying oceanography, water chemistry and productivity in the coastal marine environment. Includes project planning, data gathering and analysis.
A hands-on, practical introduction to gathering and analysing marine science data. The paper revolves around six boat-based transects on the Otago coast, during which students actively participate in collecting physical, chemical and biological oceanographic data using methods including CTD casts, water sampling and line-transect surveys for marine mammals. Students then analyse the data they have gathered to identify different coastal water masses and hotspots of biological production. Includes an introduction to GIS analyses. The research design, data collection and analysis skills learned will be useful for anyone pursuing postgraduate study.
