Overview
A study of selected significant musical styles and composers of Classical Western art music, with special emphasis upon the development of new musical languages within music history.
Why are there so many different types of Western art music, such as concerto, solo song, oratorio, symphony and sonata? And why are there so many different ways in which these genres have been written over the centuries? You will explore the styles of composition in Western art music from an analytical and historical perspective. The topics range from medieval through to modern periods, focusing on four main subject areas to provide depth of inquiry. Students will learn to recognise a variety of musical forms and compositional techniques and to place them in historical context.
