Overview
Examines selected global health problems in order to deepen understanding of epidemiological concepts and to review current knowledge about the distribution, determinants and prospects for control of these conditions.
This paper provides a population perspective on selected health issues and considers the relative importance of these problems in New Zealand and globally. It also highlights the importance of reliable evidence to the effective control of major health problems. On completion of the paper, students will be in a better position to make a constructive and knowledgeable contribution to discussions about health and healthcare-related issues. For instance, students will be better equipped to assess published literature, media reports and other sources of health information and to judge their accuracy and relevance. Moreover, by considering how knowledge about various health conditions has evolved, students will have a basis for assessing new information as it emerges in the future.
PUBH 211 can be taken as a stand-alone paper, as part of a minor in Public Health or as part of a major in Public Health in the Bachelor of Health Sciences.
