Overview
Surveys different popular manifestations in the life of the Spanish American countries after independence. Amid an ongoing debate about what constitutes popular culture vis-à-vis high or elitist culture, examples of film, music, alternative (non-European) cultural practices, and popular literature will be discussed and analysed. (For students with knowledge of Spanish; texts will be in Spanish.)

Students who successfully complete the paper will be able to:
- Participate in discussions about Latin American cultural development and cultural icons
- Develop an appreciation and understanding of Latin America social practices and cultural products
- Construct a detailed and critical argument on an aspect of popular culture, supporting this with evidence and opinions from a range of primary and secondary sources
- Write a 2,000-word essay in Spanish on a topic chosen by the lecturer
