    An introduction to the design, construction and installation of engineering services for land development, including water, wastewater, stormwater, electrical, street lighting, communication and gas.

    The provision of roading infrastructure and engineering services is a fundamental aspect of the land development process. A practising surveyor in Aotearoa New Zealand working in land development needs to be capable of undertaking the majority of the engineering works associated with land development, as well as knowing which professionals to engage with to undertake other aspects of land development. This paper provides a pathway for students to gain understanding and demonstrate competency in the engineering aspects of land development through the provision of a capstone engineering design project using an industry standard land development software package. The paper also builds on fundamental engineering principles covered in SURV 203 and SURV 204 by introducing concepts in soil mechanics, pavement design and construction, concrete construction, water reticulation design and construction and the provision of telecommunication, electricity and gas services.

    This paper generally has three lectures, one tutorial and and one practical session per week.

    Learning Outcomes

    Upon successful completion of this paper, students will have gained competencies in:

    • Designing roading infrastructure and drainage systems (stormwater and foul water) for land subdivisions using an industry standard land development computer software package
    • Supervising the construction of drainage networks
    • Understanding and facilitating the geotechnical aspects of investigations for, and development of, land subdivisions
    • Understanding the uses of natural soils and engineered soil solutions in land development
    • Undertaking basic road pavement design, including the materials used and the methods employed
    • Supervising basic concrete construction
    • Working collaboratively to first develop an engineering design and then present this design to their peers
