Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre (EDOR) members have been successful in obtaining highly competitive project funding from the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC).

Professor Dave Grattan, Director of the Centre for Neuroendocrinology in the Department of Anatomy, received two project grants worth ~$1.2 million each. One of these grants aims to investigate a novel brain pathway involved in the pathogenesis of obesity and type-2 diabetes. The second grant will investigate the molecular basis and a potential treatment for hot flushes during menopause.

Professor Jeremy Krebs, Clinical Leader of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Capital and Coast District Health Board, is a co-investigator on a project led by Dr Jason Gurney.  Their research will assess the burden of having a dual diagnosis of both cancer and diabetes. The researchers will use breast cancer as an example to investigate how diabetes affects cancer diagnosis, treatment and survival outcomes for New Zealanders, and especially for Māori and Pacific peoples who have a much higher prevalence of type-2 diabetes.

Dr Reremoana (Moana) Theodore, Co-Director of the National Centre for Lifecourse Research (NCLR), is a key investigator on a grant awarded to Te Pou Tiringa Incorporated, the governing body of the Māori early childhood centre Te Kōpae Piripono. This project  is led by Māori and draws on both mātauranga Māori and Western science. The researchers will determine what constitutes effective kaupapa Māori early years provision that strengthens positive child behaviours, and which lead to more equitable opportunities for good health throughout life.
