About Distance Learning

Professional and personal interest lifelong learning

For more than 30 years, the University of Otago has been offering distance learning programmes. The University of Otago has over 130 programmes (including endorsements) available to study by distance.

The University’s outstanding reputation for excellence in research attracts a diverse range of learners. Many are studying to update their professional knowledge or to advance their career. Others are studying out of interest or to satisfy a sense of curiosity about a particular topic.

Distance study at the University focuses on those areas in which the University has specific expertise. The full range of papers and programmes draws on established strengths in responding to identified needs within the widespread communities we serve.

The primary focus for distance learning at Otago is to provide the best possible learning environment for its students, not simply just to “go online”.
