About GeoComputation 2019 - Adventures in GeoComputation

The 15th International Conference on GeoComputation, GeoComputation 2019, ran from 18th to 21st September 2019 in Queenstown, New Zealand. It marked the return of the GeoComputation conference to New Zealand (after the 2nd conference in Dunedin, 1997). This conference, jointly organised by the University of Otago, University of Auckland, University of Canterbury and Victoria University Wellington, was run in conjunction with the New Zealand Geospatial Research Conference (NZGRC) 2019.

GeoComputation 2019, like the previous GeoComputation conferences, attracted researchers from around the world—North America, Europe, Asia as well as from Australasia—presenting research of impressive breadth, featuring state-of-the-art work at the convergence of multiple disciplines, from experienced to early-career researchers, including opportunities for presenting graduate student findings.

The proceedings are online and available via the University of Auckland figshare site. There you will find 23 papers and 41 extended abstracts there that have passed review by two members of our international Scientific Review Committee. In addition there are 4 keynote and 6 poster abstracts.

These proceedings covered the following topic areas:

  • A themed session on Novel spatiotemporal paradigms
  • Cyber GIS, Open Geospatial and VGI
  • Environmental modelling, Remote Sensing, Surfaces and Hydrology
  • Qualitative spatial reasoning and 'Geography in Text'
  • Applied (inc. urban and social) spatial analysis, Geosimulation and Agents;
  • Geostatistics and Uncertainty
  • AI, Machine learning and Spatial data mining
  • Computational Movement Analysis

We had four excellent keynote speakers:

  • Janet Franklin (University of California Riverside, US)
  • Rachel Franklin (Newcastle University, UK)
  • Shawn Laffan (University of New South Wales, Australia)
  • Mark Gahegan (University of Auckland, NZ)

We were also privileged to have Serge Rey (University of California Riverside, US) running his Spatial Data Science workshop in Queenstown.

Thanks to everyone supporting the conference in various roles, including our sponsors: Koordinates, University of Otago Sciences / Surveying, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), University of Auckland School of Environment, Geospatial Research Institute (GRI), Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA) and Locus.

A post-conference special edition of the Journal of Spatial Information Science (JoSIS) was published in December 2020 (in Volume 21). It features selected (open-access) papers that were developed from short papers in the GeoComputation 2019 proceedings.
