Lab and field equipment is suitable for invertebrate and vertebrate macropaleontology, paleobotany and micropaleontology. The main lab is associated with the Geology Museum, and has public viewing windows. In summary:

  • Fossil preparation lab: 6 workspaces, with dust extraction; airscribes, microjack, pneumatic chisels and drills small and large; air abrasive unit; dry cutoff grinder; rock saw and lap; long-focus binocular scopes; fume hood, chemical storage, dedicated area for polyester/ epoxy resin casting; 2 wet benches with gas burner stations; vacuum chamber; hoists for moving large specimens; extensive reference collection of NZ Cenozoic and Mesozoic fossils.
  • Microfossil preparation: wet lab with gas burners, fume hood suited especially for foraminiferal preparation, drying racks; reference collection of NZ Cenozoic foraminifera.
  • Field gear: chain saw with rock-cutting chain, masonry saw; petrol-powered rotary percussion drill; 12 hp portable compressor, chipping hammers, pneumatic drills; cables and winch; heavy trailer
