Structural geology research

Structural Geology at Otago

The geology department at Otago has an active teaching and research programme in structural geology. Here is just a glimpse of what you could be doing whilst researching or studying structural geology at Otago:

Alpine Fault

The Alpine Fault is the onshore portion of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. It can be seen by a remarkably straight line along the western foothills of the Southern Alps. The Alpine Fault has been a significant research area at Otago for many years.

Earthquakes in New Zealand have a significant effect on people and property. In the earthquakes section of our website we have various earthquake scenarios for the Otago area.

Our research is aimed at unravelling the controls on geological processes. These include, plate tectonic driving forces, crust-mantle coupling, fluvial and glacial erosion, the thermal regime, material rheology
