Research

Taryn is interested in the ways in which the philosophy of language and the philosophy of science can inform ethical decisions in medicine, especially psychiatry. Her PhD focused on ways in which 'mental illness' could be defined to safeguard against abusive medical treatment, such as forced conversion therapy for gay people and the institutionalisation of political dissidents.

Taryn is currently working alongside Associate Professor Lynley Anderson in a project regarding the gender binary in sport, and how this could be adapted to ensure the inclusion of transgender athletes as well as fairness.
