Regulation of trafficking of ion channels in epithelia is key to epithelial cell function. Many channels are removed from the plasma membrane for either degradation or recycling. Recently, the Retromer and Retriever recycling complexes have been implicated in the recycling of several membrane proteins. However, our understanding of ion channel recycling via these complexes is still emerging.

In this project, you will investigate the role of recycling complexes in the recycling of two epithelial ion channels using a range of protein biochemistry, molecular biology, electrophysiological and imaging techniques. Understanding these pathways will assist in defining novel trafficking partners of K+ and Na+ channels that may be used therapeutically in diseases.
