The School of Geography, Te Iho Whēnua was established in 1946. Last year the School marked this 75-year milestone with two publications – a book of alumni reflections with memories of each decade and a collection covering 11 papers that represent key Otago Geography research since 1946.
The in-person celebration of the 75th anniversary was held on 17 November 2022, delayed a year due to COVID-19 restrictions. The event brought together students, staff and alumni for discussion, speeches and refreshments.
Head of School Professor Etienne Nel says it has been rewarding to reflect on the past, which informs the present and future of a School he is very proud of.
“The School of Geography, Te Iho Whēnua has always been a place of innovative thinkers, exploring the relationships between people and place. The School has contributed a lot to our nation’s understanding of ourselves, and it’s great to pause and celebrate that together as a community,” Professor Nel says.
The event was followed by the Ron Lister Public Lecture, with special speaker Professor Julian Agyeman, visiting from Tufts University in Boston.
