Background and interests

Dr Sander Zwanenburg is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Science at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He earned a Bachelor and a Master of Science degree in Economics and Business from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and a PhD degree in Management Information Systems from The University of Hong Kong.

Sander's research interest lies in two main areas.

  • The psychology of personal IT use:
    Sander wrote his PhD dissertation on smartphone addiction. In Hong Kong and New Zealand, he has conducted experiments on the role of personal IT use on interruptions, attention, experience, and conflicted behaviour.
  • The development of measures and metrics:
    Aware of the gap between how we measure and how we need to measure in social science, Sander has also developed a passion to advance the field with better measurement methods and the development of valid metrics, in particular using questionnaire and bibliometric data.

Sander's work has been published in premier outlets including the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), the Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS), and Scientometrics.

He is Secretary of the Australasian Association for Information Systems, which is the regional chapter of the Association for Information Systems. He is ad-hoc reviewer for Information Systems Research (ISR), Information Systems Frontiers (ISF), ICIS, CAIS, and others, and is member of the Association for Information Systems and the Academy of Management.

He has won Best Paper Awards on solo-authored papers in the Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS). All of the publications he led have appeared in venues that have been ranked A or A*.

Sander teaches 'Information Systems Strategy and Governance', 'Information and Communication Technology', and 'Research Methods for Digital Health'. He uses teaching cases in some of his courses.
