Fiona teaches and researches in human resource management. She worked in industry prior to entering tertiary education. Fiona was a recipient of a Bright Futures Doctoral Scholarship. Her PhD examined the impact of legislation on HRM policy and practice. Her current research interests include HRM and how HRM impacts on employees' wellbeing at work as well as the relationship between HRM and organisational performance. Her most recent work is focused on undertanding the role of sustainable HRM at work, along with its implementation and impacts.

Fiona has undertaken several senior leadership roles within the Otago Business School. From 2016 to 2019, Fiona was the Associate Dean Postgraduate and from 2019 to 2024 was the Head of Department for Management.

Fiona has received several research accolades, including winning the University of Otago Early Career Award for Distinction in Research in 2008 and her article titled “Workplace Values and Beliefs: An Empirical Study of Ideology, High Commitment Management and Unionization” published with Alan Geare and Ian McAndrew in The International Journal of Human Resource Management volume 20 issue 5, was been selected as one of the 50 best articles out of 15,000 published in 2009 in the top 400 business and management journals and has therefore won an Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence.
