May-2018-calendar-image
Ario Smith, a Digital Content Producer at Web Services, took this photo of #thatwanakatree which has become the May 2018 digital calendar.

Ario Smith wondered why so many photographers – and selfie sticks – were jostling for a spot to capture a particularly lovely photo of a tree in Lake Wanaka.

In the end he waded out into the lake to keep them all out of his photo – and his efforts paid off. The photo made the top 12 in last year’s Bulletin Board Photo Competition, and has become the Otago Bulletin Board May 2018 digital calendar.

The Otago Bulletin Board digital calendar, released each month, features the 12 winning and notable entries from the previous year’s photo competition.

Mr Smith, a Digital Content Producer at Web Services, says he googled the tree (a willow originally planted as a fence post) after he took the shot and learned about the hashtag #thatwanakatree.

“It started as a kind-of in-joke, but with the rise of photo sharing has become a must-do for any visitor with Instagram. For this shot, I walked into the lake to ensure no selfie sticks or yoga poses made it into the frame.”

And while the tree is exceptionally popular among visitors to Wanaka – his photo is outstanding.
