The Graduate Research School has launched a new Activity Passport to promote the wellbeing of graduate research candidates and encourage them to get out and explore Dunedin and its surrounds while they study here.

The passport sized booklets are specially designed for students – with 31 activity suggestions, complete with their distance from the Clocktower building, icons indicating what sort of activity they are, boxes to tick when an activity is complete, and photos to inspire.

Suggestions range from “Take a dip at St Clair Saltwater Pool” to “Play disc golf at Chingford Park in North East Valley” and “Go cockling at Papanui Inlet”.

"The Passport is full of great ideas and they are a really lovely looking memento of time spent in Dunedin. Candidates can join forces with each other to arrange outings to the places featured."

Graduate Research School Client Services Administrator, Susan Craig, says they wanted to encourage students to get out of their labs and offices and to build some great memories of Dunedin.

“The Passport is full of great ideas and they are a really lovely looking memento of time spent in Dunedin. Candidates can join forces with each other to arrange outings to the places featured.”

She says the idea came out of a brainstorming session in the Graduate Research School tearoom where they each contributed ideas of places they would like to encourage students to visit.

“I then drafted up a first version of the passport before getting the design team involved to produce our final version. It is gorgeous. Ben Williams in the Design Team did a great job on this project and Cat O’Sullivan was my contact to get the project progressed. “

“We are very happy with the final product and hope that it will be customised for our other campuses in time.”

The Dunedin version is being given to Doctoral and Master’s Thesis candidates at events such as Dean’s Morning Teas for new PhD candidates and Induction workshops for new doctoral and Masters by thesis candidates. They are also being given out at the Postgraduate Welcomes organised by the International Office.

Anyone wanting one can also pop into the School at 103 St David Street – and a digital version will soon be available on its website.
