Research

My research is about The Development and Integration of Pharmacist Prescriber roles in Primary Care in New Zealand.

I have undertaken a survey of Pharmacist Prescribers registered to practice within this scope by the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand to determine the range of activities currently undertaken by these practitioners.

This is a new role in New Zealand with 32 pharmacists registered under this scope of practice, of which 26 are working in Primary Care (the remainder in Secondary or hospital based environments).

Preliminary investigation by other researchers has identified the development of these roles but has not investigated what activities are undertaken. Previous research has suggested these roles could be further expanded and may provide additional resource to help met proposed demand on both primary and secondary health services.
