Periodontics module:
- The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases and of factors that may modify the course of the diseases and to allow demonstration of the clinical skills needed for the diagnosis and management of patients with periodontal diseases.
Endodontics module:
- The module commences with information on dental pain and the management of carious lesions in close proximity to the pulp. It introduces pulp and periapical disease processes and their management. Root canal morphology and endodontic radiography are studied. Time will be spent learning about the deconstruction, isolation and provisional restoration of compromised teeth. The bulk of teaching is then about root canal treatment, with considerable time spent on the mechanical devices, irrigants, dressings and filling materials involved.
Clinical Cariology and Restorative Dentistry module:
- The module integrates the knowledge and skills required to achieve initial clinical experience in the management of plaque related diseases. It includes the development of knowledge and manipulative skills in cariology, operative dentistry, radiology, local analgesia, properties of restorative materials, work methods and communication skills.
Removable Partial Prosthodontics module:
- The module initially introduces students to the scope of removable prosthodontics and gerodontology. Conceptually, this module addresses the prosthodontic management of the fully edentulous patient, principally by means of complete removable dentures.
Oral Surgery module:
- The module will introduce the student to the basic concepts of oral surgery and exodontia; general medicine and surgery related to the safe practice of dentistry; concepts of clinical practice and interaction with the patient; peri-operative pain and anxiety control; applied pharmacology and therapeutics related to minor oral surgery; and concepts of post-operative management. It is envisaged that in the third year, the emphasis will be on preclinical didactic, tutorial and simulation-based teaching, with minimal patient contact. This aims to provide a sound base of essential knowledge to cultivate good clinical acumen during the oral surgery block course planned for the fourth year.

- On completion of this module, students are expected to demonstrate the knowledge, values and competencies required to undertake dental practice in a professional manner.
