This paper examines the history of ideas pertaining to South Asian society under British rule. We will explore cultural debates and intellectual struggles around religion, race and caste from the mid-18th to early 20th centuries. We will assess contests over important elements of material culture, such as tea and clothing, allowing us to engage with a diverse range of perspectives from various South Asian communities.
