The law as to the various kinds of torts.
At its most basic level, law of torts decides when behaviour is wrong and when someone harmed by that wrongful behaviour is deserving of compensation or some other private law remedy. Functionally, the law of torts serves to protect rights to the safety and dignity of the persons, to property, and to economic interests.

Students who successfully complete this paper will be able to:

- Discuss the various issues arising in respect of each tort covered and account for how they have been resolved in New Zealand and other relevant jurisdictions
- Demonstrate an appreciation of how tortious obligations relate to other sources of legal obligations and rights
- Discuss the rationale for the accident compensation scheme, its core concepts
