SURV 299 is a compulsory paper for BSurv students. This paper is a one-week, intensive field course that applies the concepts and theories relating to road design and set-out that are introduced to students during their 200-level papers and allows them to experience real-world examples of fieldwork and computer design using industry standard software.

- Eligibility
- Because this paper is a compulsory fieldcamp for those students in the professional years of the BSurv degree students are required to have completed the SURV 203 and SURV 204 papers. Also, students must have attended the lectures and passed the tests of the Calculation Module of SURV 207.

- The field course covers three main areas of road design and set. They are:
- Complete calculations relating to roading and earthworks set-out
- Undertake the fieldwork associated with roading and earthworks and complete field calculations as required
- Undertake roading and earthworks design using an industry-standard computer program and produce plans suitable for actual use
- Teaching Arrangements
- SURV 299 is completed as a one-week field course. Initial calculations are completed as part of a four-hour tutorial, which occurs before the start of the camp. All lectures, fieldwork, instruction on the use of the computer program, design work and the production of plans and report are completed during the five-day period that the camp runs for.

By the completion of this field course, students should
- Have been introduced to a software package that will produce acceptable roading plans
- Have designed and checked a road using the software package that they have been introduced to
- Have completed all of the calculation and checks required to confirm that the software package has produced correct road plans
- Have produced a complete set of roading plans (i.e. a plan, a longsection and two cross-sections) to the required specifications
- Have calculated the set-out information for a road curve
- Have undertaken the practical exercise of setting out a road curve and completed the batter staking associated with the road set-out
- Have completed all of the required field checks and fieldnotes to support the location of the road curve and associated batter stakes
- Have demonstrated their proficiency in using suitable survey equipment and technologies to complete all of the required tasks
