The Master of Applied Science (MAppSc) is a 180-point, coursework postgraduate degree. A candidate would normally be a graduate but the degree is also open to those with other relevant qualifications.

The MAppSc is designed for students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary programme of study underpinned by science that delivers versatile skills relevant to multiple end-users. Optional paths are available that enphasise commercialisation, workplace-based projects or independent study. The Applied Science Programme provides graduates with in-depth knowledge, information literacy and interdisciplinary perspective. Our graduates understand the theory and the application of scientific principles (e.g. observation, abstraction, logic, hypothesis, experimentation and peer critique), and the programme targets those areas of scientific knowledge and application that will benefit people and economies nationally and globally.

The MAppSc can be completed in 12 months or in stages, providing flexibility for recent graduates and those currently employed.

You can study for a Master of Applied Science in a variety of majors. We support two majors, namely Software Engineering and Telecommunications.

Software Engineering

Software Engineering is about the sound construction of computer systems for today and tomorrow. This includes areas such as modelling complex interactive systems, identifying how computer information systems can be made to improve performance, managing the construction of information systems, and ensuring that procedures are in place for system testing and maintenance.

Telecommunications is all about the devices, systems, and techniques that enable people to communicate with each other. This involves looking at the way information is transmitted over various media, and how networks of these communications media are organised, managed and used.

Admission requirements

A candidate would normally be a graduate but the degree is also open to those with other relevant qualifications.

  • Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).
  • Every applicant shall have fulfilled one of the following conditions:
    • be a graduate and have achieved an average grade of at least B in the relevant 300-level papers;
    • have obtained a Postgraduate Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science with an average grade of at least B;
    • have equivalent alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).*
  • In considering an applicant's qualifications, regard will be had to the detail of the course of study followed to gain the qualification, as well as the applicant's performance in the programme.

*Note to international applicants: an Otago B is roughly equivalent to achieving grades of 75 in China, 55 (Second Class) or GPA 6/10 in India, 14/20 in Iran, 2.5/4 in Pakistan, for example.
