History and background

SPAR was established in 2004 by Co-Directors Richard Walter and Chris Jacomb. When Chris retired in 2016 Richard continued as Director until 2018 when Dr Karen Grieg joined as Co-Director.

Before forming SPAR, Richard and Chris were active researchers who also had backgrounds in cultural heritage management. They saw an opportunity to enhance the work being carried out in the area of cultural heritage management and to develop a strong research programme in New Zealand archaeology.
