In a public lecture, Professor Robin Gauld of the Centre for Health Systems questions the cost and vulnerability of New Zealand's reliance on foreign-trained health professionals.

New Zealand is the largest importer of overseas doctors in the OECD, who make up 54% of rural doctors and 38% of urban doctors in the country. New Zealand had a long history of immigration from the UK of medical professionals, but Professor Gauld's research found that amongst doctors from the UK who came to work in New Zealand, 53% had stayed after one year and 30% after two years.

Professor Gauld's lecture was based on his recent visiting professorship at the London School of Advanced Studies.
