The POPO Pacific Chemistry Scholarship is run through the Pacific Islands Research and Student Support Unit (PIRSSU) at the University of Otago. The scholarship supports Pacific students to prepare for the CHEM 191 Chemical Basis of Biology and Human Health paper, as part of Health Sciences First Year (HSFY).
Designed to support Pacific students interested in a career in health, the Pacific Opportunities Programmes at Otago (POPO) Chemistry Scholarship provides access to the CHEM 150 Concepts in Chemistry paper, as well as continuous support through the CHEM 191 paper and HSFY.
General eligibility criteria
Application for this scholarship is open to all students who are of indigenous Pacific decent and hold either New Zealand citizenship, or a New Zealand Residence Class Visa.
Application process
Every applicant must:
- Submit the official application form by the specified due date;
- Submit a separate application to enrol in the CHEM 150 paper in Summer School, as well as the Health Sciences First Year programme at the University of Otago.
Selection of recipients
The Pacific Islands Research and Student Support Unit shall consider the following factors in awarding the scholarship:
- Previous secondary school study undertaken.
- Potential and motivation to succeed at university.
- A commitment to pursue Health Science study and a career in health.
Scholarship detail
The following information applies to this Scholarship, subject to the specific provisions of the offer letter for the recipient:
- Standard value of ~$2,500
- Standard tenure is one year.
- To receive the scholarship the recipient must be enrolled in the CHEM 191 Chemical Basis of Biology and Human Health paper.
- Payment of the scholarship will be made in covering the cost of the tuition fees of the CHEM 191 Chemical Basis of Biology and Human Health paper and towards the cost of staying in a Residential College for the 2-week period that students need to be on campus to complete the paper.
- Additional resources, tutorials, and academic support throughout enrolment in CHEM 191 will also be provided.
- This scholarship may be held concurrently with any other University of Otago Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship where applicable.
