Background information
The aim of this research is to assess how variations in our genes affect our body shape, how we process kai (food) and the risk of developing diabetes, gout and heart diseases, and in the long term lead to better prevention and treatment options for these diseases.
CREBRF is a gene which may influence how we store and use energy that we get from food. This gene variation is common in Māori and Pasifika. Research in men has shown that this gene variant may protect against diabetes. We wish to further understand its impact in women.
This trial was designed by research staff at the Universities of Auckland and Otago, in a partnership with Ngāti Porou Hauora and the Moko foundation.

What does the study involve?
Testing will involve you coming in fasted (i.e. no food or drink from 10:00pm the night before) to the University of Otago, Wellington campus in Newtown for one morning.
The following tests will be completed:
- A body composition scan (DXA): this tells us where and how much fat and muscle you have in your body.
- Resting metabolic rate: measures how much energy you use during the day.
- Blood test for measurement of your metabolism.
- Meal test: you will be given a meal and we will measure how your body processes this with some blood tests.
- Answer questions about your health.
In addition, you can take with you the results of all your individual tests. And you will receive $100 contribution for your time/expenses.
