Overview
According to our screening guidelines, “ensuring women make an informed decision about antenatal screening for Down syndrome and other conditions is a legal requirement.” But are women really making informed choices? the answer is - we don't know. International evidence would suggest not. Working with women and maternity-care providers this project will undertake an in-depth exploration of the process around informed choice, asking questions about what women and providers need and how they view informed choice. This project will focus in particular on a new genetic screening technology (non-invasive prenatal testing; NIPT). This is a complex area of health care but we need to ensure the right to informed choice is being upheld.
