Background and interests

Dr Rona Carroll is a general practitioner specialising in youth health andtransgender healthcare andisa senior lecturer in the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice. Rona graduated with an MBChB in 2003 and has been a fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners since 2016.

Rona has been working in youth health since 2012 and now works as part of a unique gender affirming healthcare team based in primary care. Rona has led the writing of the Aotearoa Primary Care Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy Initiation Guidelines: https://blogs.otago.ac.nz/rainbow/and is an exec member and pastVice President of the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA).She regularly advises Te Whatu Ora on matters relating to gender affirming healthcare.

Teaching activities

Rona co-convenes the MBChB 4th-year Primary Health Care and General Practice module and the postgraduate paper GENA 702: Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare. She is also contributes to transgender healthcare teaching at all year levels.

Research activities

Rona’s research focuses on gender affirming healthcare with a focus on primary care, hormone therapy and sexual and reproductive health.
