Contagion is a drama/“medical thriller” about the spread of an influenza-like viral disease globally and the response by public health authorities in the USA. It has been praised by some science commentators for being relatively realistic from a scientific and public health perspective (eg, the epidemiology, use of various disease control measures and development of a vaccine). Nevertheless, some minor aspects still seem somewhat implausible and some of the minor dramatic themes may distract from the main story. (For a piece in the journal Science about the science advisor to the movie see: Science 2011;333:1219).
