Welcome to the Department of Economics
We are one of the top teaching and research departments in New Zealand. A recent external review pointed out that the “collegial atmosphere”, “open door policy with students” and the “high level of research productivity” are some of our outstanding strengths.
We strive to provide a supportive environment for students. We offer a full range of coursework at the undergraduate level, including coursework leading to postgraduate study. At the Honours, Master’s and PhD levels, students work on their research with staff on an individual basis. Our staff have state-of-the-art expertise, particularly in empirical and experimental research in a variety of micro- and macroeconomic areas. Weekly seminars bring to the Department leading scholars from New Zealand, Australia, Europe and North America and brown-bag workshops allow students and staff to get feedback on their research ideas. Also, we host various conferences and workshops with international participants.
If you are interested in economics, I hope you will consider a major or minor in economics or apply for admission to our postgraduate programmes
