Handbook for PhD Study
The PhD Handbook provides detailed information on all aspects of PhD study at Otago, from seeking admission to the examination process and graduation.
It can be viewed online or you can download the entire PhD Handbook (412k in PDF format).

Applying for PhD Study
Summary Information
All intending PhD candidates should download and read the Summary Information Sheet (104k in PDF format) thoroughly before applying for candidature. Application forms for direct and interim admission include enrolment sections; enrolment will be actioned following approval of admission.
International Students
International students wishing to enrol for the first time at the University of Otago should follow the International Students Application Process. Please note that Australian students need not follow this process, but may instead apply in the same manner as New Zealand students (see below).
Direct Admission
This is the normal category of admission to PhD study. You should apply for direct admission if your thesis topic and supervisory arrangements have been finalised.

Interim Admission
You should apply for interim admission only if your thesis topic and supervisors arrangements have not yet been finalised. Interim admission is granted for a period of no more than three months.

Interim to Direct Admission
You should complete this application form only if you have already been admitted on an interim basis and you are ready to be admitted on a direct basis.

Upgrade from a Master's or Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours Degree
If upgrading from a thesis Master's degree or Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours degree, you should complete the Direct Admission Application Form (100k in PDF format). Such applicants should be enrolled in, but have not completed, their current degree; should typically have completed at least a year of thesis work; and, should have the full support of their department (or in the case of BMedSc(Hons) students, the approval of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine).
The supervisor of an upgrading student should attach information justifying the upgrade.

Exceptional PhD Theses
A thesis is of exceptional quality when all three examiners of a candidate's thesis agree that the thesis is of an exceptional standard in every respect - research content, originality, quality of expression and accuracy of presentation - and is amongst the top 10% of theses examined.

The Graduate Junction is an international networking site developed especially for graduate research students. Connecting and networking with other research students is vitally important and we are thrilled with the opportunities that The Graduate Junction will provide for Otago's PhD and research Masters candidates.

Doctoral and Scholarships Office
The Doctoral and Scholarships Office in Student Administration administers all central aspects of the University's PhD programme including admission, progress reporting and examinations.
Graduate Research Services
Graduate Research Services provides oversight of the University's graduate research programmes.
Doctoral Lounge
The Doctoral Lounge is located on the first floor of the University Union Building.
This attractively furnished room is available for use by all Doctoral candidates, with swipe entry via current student ID cards. The Doctoral Lounge features an automated coffee machine, toaster, microwave, toasted sandwich maker and large refrigerator, and is free for graduate research students to use. There is also a telephone with internal University access and a computer with internet access and Endnote.
It's a pleasant place to read, enjoy a cup of coffee or lunch, or just to relax.
