Completing a PhD, professional doctorate, or research master's thesis requires hard work, dedication and motivation – fortunately the University of Otago has a range of services in place to support you.

Candidate Mentoring/Development

The Graduate Research School offers confidential, one-on-one Graduate Research Candidate Mentoring/Development sessions.

Resources on Blackboard

Doctoral and master's thesis candidates have Blackboard websites that host a range of workshop material and online resources to support all parts of the research journey.

Statistics and Research

Postgraduate students carrying out quantitative research are encouraged to consider enrolling in a suitable statistics paper, such as INFO 420 (for those with a 100-level background in statistics) or STAT 401 (for those with some 200-level statistics). You can explore your options by contacting the Director for Postgraduate Studies in Statistics.

If your research has a health science focus, consider HASC 413 Biostatistics and HASC 415 Regression Methods: Health Sciences Applications.

Writing for Publication in the Social Sciences

Postgraduate students in the Social Sciences should consider enrolling for the paper EDUC 464 Writing Journal Articles for Publication.

Get guidance and feedback through the stages of writing a journal article - which will be ready for submission at the end.

Māori and Indigenous Pacific Peoples Conference Funding

Information on funding which is available to assist graduate research candidates of Māori or indigenous Pacific descent attend domestic and international conferences.

Committees

The Graduate Research Committee has oversight of graduate research processes and policies. The Graduate Research Student Liaison Committee provides an official forum for students to discuss issues relating to graduate research at Otago.
