Shared private rental accommodation in New Zealand, otherwise known as flatting, is a popular option for many students. Flats are an independent way of living where you join a group of people in a house and share costs. Some flats are furnished; others are not.

Flat rent often doesn't include electricity, telephone and internet (utilities), so you will need to pay for these each month additional to your rent payment. You will need to pay a deposit or bond before you move in, to cover any damage you may cause. This is typically 2–4 weeks' worth of rent.

Tenancy information

Tenancy Services is part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). This website has information and resources to help tenants and landlords act with confidence, build good relationships, and solve any problems that may arise during your tenancy. You can find information on both yours and your landlords rights and responsiblities under the Residential Tenancies Act.

A wide range of information is available from the website, including:

Where to look for a flat

One of the best ways to find a flat, a room to rent, or to find flatmates is to search online. Check out the following websites:

Accommodation information for University of Otago students in Wellington, including Radiation Therapy students

The Wellington region offers a variety of housing for students.

Apartments are very popular and many students will flat together. A lease would normally operate from 1 February to 30 January.

The University of Otago does not have any residential colleges in Wellington. You can apply to Victoria House, which is a student hostel run by Victoria University. Please be aware that if you apply with Victoria University you will need to pay a non-refundable application fee.

Victoria House provides a strong community and academic focus for first-year and returning students. Multi-storey buildings housing 184 residents. Outdoor grassed courtyard with surrounding gardens. Fully furnished study bedrooms (excluding linen), 140 single rooms and 44 twinshare rooms. Single rooms and twinshares are available, electricity, heating, water charges and internet are included in the room rates. The accommodation fees are payable in advance in four instalments throughout the academic year. A weekly payment option is also available.

The Cube Hall – 242 Taranaki St (run by Massey University)

The Cube Hall is part of the Massey Halls Wellington portfolio, offering accommodation for students of all tertiary providers in Wellington, and Massey senior students. This hall has 24/7 support and dedicated on-site staff.
