It's winter, why would we want to talk our socks off? Well, not literally of course – but the CHI team, in collaboration with the Heart Foundation, are running free public talks in Christchurch, from June to September.
The series kicked off on Thursday 28 June with Dr Geoff Clare, Consultant Cardiologist and Researcher of the clinical team and Dr Anna Pilbrow, Senior Research Fellow, from the molecular biology and genetics team. The venue was full to capacity with Geoff explaining atrial fibrillation and the latest research from the CHI on the condition and Anna discussing why heart disease runs in families.
The audience were highly entertained by Geoff and Anna's acting ability as they gave a stellar performance, demonstrating how atrial fibrillation affects the heart. Geoff, who towers over Anna in height, created the fluttering upper heart chambers with his hands, while Anna's arms showed the pumping rhythm of the lower heart chambers. Who ever knew we had such acting talent among us?!!
The next talk evening is on Thursday 26 July with CHI Director, Professor Mark Richards: A Better Crystal Ball - predicting who will get heart disease.
