Akhilesh Swaminathan imageAkhilesh Swaminathan is a Gastroenterologist and PhD candidate with the Department of Medicine, University of Otago, Christchurch. His research interests include non-invasive disease assessment of gastrointestinal disorders with a particular focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Akhilesh’s doctoral thesis investigates faecal myeloperoxidase as a novel biomarker of disease activity and prognosis in IBD , the associations between the inflammatory and non-inflammatory burden of IBD , and holistic disease assessment tools for IBD .

Akhilesh’s doctoral studies have been supervised by Professors Richard Gearry, Andrew Day, Tony Kettle and Mark Hampton at the University of Otago, Christchurch.
