NURS426 Nursing - Gerontology

An applied practicum in the core knowledge of gerontology nursing allied with a specialty practice focus in hospital, community and/or home nursing facilitating advanced nursing practice.

This paper will interest registered nurses working in primary, secondary or tertiary health care settings where advanced nursing skills and knowledge can be expected to improve health outcomes for older patients/clients. Nurses will develop increased confidence in assessing and managing common and complex health problems and issues facing older people. It will inform an understanding of current and future directions for gerontology nursing, including developments in integrated health services and models of care.

Paper Structure
This paper enables participants to expand their knowledge base for gerontological nursing whilst accounting for socio-cultural and political context, environment and complexity. It will explore a range of relevant nursing models, frameworks and strategies to enable the nurse to assess, plan and evaluate culturally appropriate care for older people.
Teaching Arrangements

This Distance Learning paper is a combination of remote and in-person teaching.

Three study blocks - Two 3-day study blocks and one 2-day study block.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this paper, nurses will be able to:

  1. Critically examine current and potential issues and developments in ageing within New Zealand society from nursing, socio-cultural, political and ethical perspectives.
  2. Contribute to preventative and health promotion measures to improve outcomes for older people in a range of settings.
  3. Discuss and critique key considerations, assessment approaches and advances in nursing older people with chronic, multiple co-morbidities and specific conditions such as dementia, delirium, depression, stroke, Parkinson's disease and those with palliative care needs.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of medication use in gerontology nursing.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to be reflective, critical and safe practitioners within advancing competency levels.
  6. Apply the principles of cultural safety in nursing practice in alignment with the policies of the Nursing Council of New Zealand and the Treaty of Waitangi.
  7. Illustrate the application of nursing knowledge and models of care that contribute to quality and audit processes and, ultimately, positive outcomes for older people.
  8. Analyse the key components of an interdisciplinary team and the nurse's role within it.
