    Determinants of obesity, evidence-based strategies for prevention and management, and the role of primary health care and community through individual, societal and environmental actions.

    This interprofessional paper will give an overview of the evidence base for individual, group, primary health care and community approaches, facilitating health professionals and community workers to develop a solid foundation of knowledge, skills and attitudes on which to deliver obesity prevention and management interventions.

    Paper Structure

    Elective paper for the Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Health Care (PGDipPHC)

    Compulsory Paper for: Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Health Sciences (PGCertHealSc and PGDipHealSc) endorsed in Obesity Prevention and Management

    Material is presented in self-directed learning modules covering the following topics:

    • Aetiology of obesity
    • Evidence for prevention and management of obesity
    • Systems and drivers for change in prevention and management of obesity
    • Attitudes towards obesity: stigma, bias and associated ethical considerations
    • Planning and implementing change in primary health care and community settings
    Teaching Arrangements

    Two-day compulsory residential workshop delivered online. Dates to be advised. Other learning at a distance via Blackboard, online videoconferencing and self-directed.

    4 evening zoom tutorials. Dates to be confirmed with students. These tutorials are 1.5 hours each and comprise Guest lectures and learning/assignment support. 

    Study Skills, resources and technology support is provided to students at no charge via a specifically developed site that is accessed through Blackboard.

    Learning Outcomes
    Upon successful completion of this paper, the student will:
    • Critically appraise the evidence basis for primary health care and community based prevention and management of obesity
    • Apply knowledge and skills required for the prevention and management of obesity in own workplace environment
    • Contribute towards a system-wide approach to the prevention and management of obesity in New Zealand with appreciation of other's roles
    • Approach obesity prevention and management in a non-stigmatising and ethical manner
