    This paper addresses specialist knowledge, problem-solving skills and technical competence in the area of primary health care nursing. It involves critique of practice and the application of research and theoretical principles to attain best practice standards. Students determine their focus as rural or urban studying their own scope of practice.

    This paper has been developed to expand/advance the knowledge base and skills of registered nurses to provide advanced primary health care nursing practice in order to contribute to improved personal, population and community health outcomes. It will focus on the application of newly acquired or extended knowledge and skills within the student's particular area of primary health care nursing.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who successfully complete the paper will be able to:

    1. Critique and synthesise theoretical frameworks in primary health and community health care nursing practice.
    2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of primary health care and health promotion philosophies and the contribution of these to advancing nursing practice.
    3. Appraise research and information appropriate to the implementation of evidence-based practice with the aim of providing excellence in primary health care nursing.
    4. Evaluate primary health care nursing models for practice.
    5. Apply advanced individual/population/community assessment skills as relevant to own practice.
    6. Apply principles of cultural safety and be reflexive to client, community/whānau/families and social issues in practice.
    7. Demonstrate an understanding of effective collaboration, interdisciplinary communication and leadership in decision making and governance of service delivery to population group(s) in own practice.
    8. Work within legal and ethical frameworks in the provision of primary health care.
