    Three key themes are explored:

    • Facilitating Change in Health Care Environments covers change theory and processes as applied in the health context
    • Leading and Managing People includes effective inter-professional communication and optimal human resourcing in health care organisations
    • Promoting Quality in Health Care Environments focuses on performance and improvement in health care delivery and evaluation of health outcomes

    This Distance Learning paper is a combination of remote and in-person teaching.

    In relation to course themes, the nurse leader who successfully completes the paper will be in a position to:

    • Facilitate Change in Health Care Environments
      1. Identify types of organisational change.
      2. Identify positive characteristics and challenges in the change process.
      3. Demonstrate understanding of the broader issues of change in health policy and delivery locally, nationally and internationally.
      4. Identify a specific need in their current work environment and formulate a strategic plan to facilitate change.
    • Lead and Manage People
      1. Demonstrate understanding of New Zealand legislation and policies impacting on the human resource management of nursing communities.
      2. Apply contemporary human resource management theories as integrated into the discipline of nursing to promote safe and rewarding workplaces.
      3. Apply project management principles to non-routine activities to accomplish specific nursing-driven goals and initiatives.
    • Promote Quality in Health Care Environments
      1. Demonstrate understanding of the philosophy and history behind the quality industry.
      2. Identify key issues of quality management and organisational performance in health care organisations to include processes for measuring and evaluating health.
      3. Identify relevant service standards and key aims of a quality-management system in current workplace.
      4. Compare and contrast with contemporary quality theory.
