At the successful completion of this paper students will be able to:
- Discuss and debate with peers on the role of research in physiotherapy and the contribution of research to evidence-based practice
- Perform an effective and efficient systematic search of major research databases to locate and manage citations and information relevant to a physiotherapy research question
- Conduct a scholarly and rigorous critique/appraisal of research articles and to present these in an informed and coherent manner
- Identify the key ethical and cultural issues underpinning selected areas of research and demonstrate an understanding of the formal compliance requirements, including consultation with Māori, necessary to conduct research in the university/clinical environment
- Understand the contributions of qualitative and quantitative methodologies to physiotherapy research and the key principles and theoretical frameworks underpinning these approaches
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the principles of scientific measurement relevant to physiotherapy and be able to critically interpret validity and reliability data with confidence
- Formulate an advanced understanding of key experimental research designs to be able to systematically critique the use of these designs
- Individually demonstrate the ability to formulate a meaningful and relevant research question and develop an appropriate research methodology and analysis strategy
- Present scientific information in appropriate formats to the level expected of postgraduate students and advanced practitioners
